The binilders’ conference concluded Jo-flay. i A motion was carried urging the Government to make arrangements for prompt and regular payments to builders carrying out contracts under the Housing Act or the Advances to Settlers Act. A Canterbury remit, that persistent efforts be made to obtain the inclusion of piece-work clauses in awards, was adopted, as was an Auckland remit, that the executive endeavour to have the proposed Registration of Builders’ Bill introduced next session. Mr. W. H. Winsor (Wellington) was re-elected president, other officials elected being: Vice-president, Mr. F. McCormack; treasurer, Mr. F. T. Fawcett ; executive, Messrs. H. Mainland, A. Wilson, A. Fletcher; representative on the Employers’ Federation Advisory Board, Mr. Mainland. The next conference was fixed for Wanganui. The conference recommended the federation to make every effort to assist ■ in the satisfactory working of the Apprentices Act, but that compulsory complementary training at a technical collegb during the day be strongly opposed. It was also decided that a conference be convened of representatives of each branch of allied trades with the object of sotting up an allied trades apprenticeship committee, and that a committee be appointed to meet representatives of the Carpenters’ Association) for formulating a policy for the guidance of individual »committees. . , A (recommendation that the Government be urged to give preference to builders training an adequate number of apprentices was adopted. An Auckland remit that contractors should supply quantities in jobs- over £lOOO was rejected.
