ROWING

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING The classic fixture of the New Zealand rowing ar is to take place at Picton on Tuesday. ■ Crews from different parts of the country will contest events in the New Zealand championship meeting. Wellington will be represented as follow Star Club. —Championship pairs: F. G. Ohorn (str.), H. R. Herd (bow). Championship double soulls: T. Davis (str.), W. Marris (bow). Junior fours and Marlborough plate: R. N. Wakelin (str.), P. Hereford (3), J. M. F. Johns (2), and R. W. Fenton (bow). Wellington Club.—Single sculls: G. Wilson. The Petone Club will not be represented, because most of the members will be unable to get away. AMATEUR DEFINITION. Christchurch, February 8. The constitution of the New Zealand Rowing Association is very in its definition of amateur oarsmen. Section 1A of the constitution says that "an amateur oarsman or sculler is one who has never entered or competed for a stake or money prizo, staked bet, or declared wager in any branch of athletic sport.” The Canterbury Rowing Association considers the constitution too drastic, and intends to do its best to get the last six words of section 1A deleted. At a meeting of the Canterbury Association, Mr. F. D. Kesteyen spoke of the severity of the ruling. He pointed out that there was a large number of young fellows keeii on Ml sport, and said that it was ridiculous to bar such youths from amateur rowing if perchance they could ride a little and competed in cycle road or track races for which money prizes were given. One could not expect a youth to be a rower only. It was decided to write to the New Zealand Association asking what procedure was necessary to f move that an alteration be made in the constitution.
