THE RACING WORLD

ACCEPTANCES TAKAPUNA AND WOODVILLE

NOTES AND COMMENTS

The Takapuna meeting will Le concluded to-day. Uralla, Drawbridge, and Golden Glass figure in the lloana Handicap. The first day’s place-getters, Penona and Lark Hall, may be close again today. The Bull-owned All Melody is spoken of as a good sort. Broadwood niay do better to-day in the Suburban Handicap. Himpo and Lady Ridicule both have pace, and the former won nicely the first day. The distance of the big handicap should suit Loyal Irish better than the Cup journey did. Te Kara and Ruapapa are both well at present. The Hannon pair, Quinette and Prince Lupin, may ajjain be first choice, but on first day form Master Doon should hold them. Aerofortis has a good weight in the Rangitoto Handicap, and may find it hard to concede Pebble II 101 b. and. Thunderclap 161 b. Explorer has only to repeat his form of a little while back to be heard of in the Open Hurdles. Maghaloire and Active, who filled the minor places the first day, should again run well. In the Anniversary Welter Handicap the public are set a task. Esthonia is looked on as above the average, but. in Cool Stimulants and Tinokaha he meets a pair who are speedy over the distance. Fair acceptances have been received for the Woodville meeting, which opens on Friday next. A big shipment of southern horses went to Lyttelton by the ferry steamer last evening. Bon Spec has been turned out for a spell, but he is to be taken up In time for autumn racing. It is reported that Roy Reed intends to appeal to the conference over his Palmerston North disqualification. The well-known Sydney jockey, Albert Wood, has retired from the saddle to take up training, and for a start in his new business he has had eight horses placed under his care by Mr. J. Baron. Wood is 35 years of age, and health reasons are given 'as the cause of his retirement from riding. Wood piloted Beauford in his famous race with Gloaming, and he has a long list of successes in important events to his credit. The brilliant Motley’s next engagement is in the Taranaki Stakes. The Jackson Stakes at Wanganui, the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie, and the North Island Challenge Stakes at Trentham, are events following that Mr. Currie may be expected to attack with his filly. The New Zealand-bred gelding. The Hawk, will apparently be provided with plenty of opportunities to extend his winning record in Australia during the coming autumn, for he figures among the entrants for the Oakleigh Plate, Caulfield Futurity Stakes, Newmarket Handicap, Doncaster Handicap, and Sydney Cup It will be interesting to learn when notes come to be compared in connection with the forthcoming fixtures as to whether The Hawk would have proved a good speculation at the sum (5000gns) recently asked for him Among the Australians who promise to build up a strong connection in the Old Country, is Norman Scobie, a son of the Victorian trainer, Mr. James >Sbobie, of Melbourne. A recent London paper states that Norman Scobile has been 1 appointed private trainer to Sir Charles Hyde, who was the purchaser of several well-bred, high-priced Yearlings at Doncaster in September last, and who is likely to race on a fairly extensive scale. At the sale of yearlings held in Canterbury in the spring of 1919, a bay colt by. Martian from the Spearmint mare Pineta commanded a lot of attention, and the Gisborne sportsman, Mr. K. S. Williams, had to advance the bidding to 1150gns. before the opposing side cried enough. Under the name of Penitent the son of Martian raced unsuccessfully at two years old, but at three years he managed to'win £495 in prize-money. As a rule, descendants of Martian improve with age, and it was arguted that something good, might be expected from Penitent at four years old. He proved, however, a complete failure, and he was sold to a Melbourne sportsman, who has not so far any reason to rejoice over the purchase of his New Zealand gelding. Penitent has been accorded a nomination for the Australian Cup, and that would at least appear to point to his training on satisfactorily. G. Jones, who returned from Australia in October to train for Mr. G. L. Stead, has severed his connection with the stable, and may set up as a public trainer at Trentham. The Martian four-year-old Rapine, who met with a slight mishap last month, has made a good recovery. J. H. Jefferd has him in easy work again and hopes to have him all right for the autumn, when it is probable he will make another trip to Australia. A compilation of figures bearing on the earnings of Loughrea in stakes since his contemplated purchase by an Australian racing man in June last, for a sum which was estimated to be in the vicinity of £3OOO, makes the same run cut to £1990. Motley’s victory in the Wellington Stakes gave her winning stake record a good lift. Up to the presept Motley has contested five races, and her record stands at four wins and a second, while £2150 is down to her credit as a stake-earner. TOO MANY SPRINT RACES IN DOMINION AUSTRALIAN CRITIC’S WARNING That there will be a general exodus of New Zealand horses to Randwick next spring is thto opinion expressed by Mr. John Brown, the Newcastle stud-owner, who has conversed with many owners during his present visit to New Zealand. “I believe racing is going back in New Zealand, due to the fact that there are altogether too many sprints,” he eaid. Leaving the Auckland express on Saturday, he paid a visit to Trentham, and was greatlv impressed with th!e quality of the public accommodation, and the general arrangements for the racing. He is convinced that a number of leading New Zealand jockeys would find a better outlet in Australia, whjere good riders are wanted. FIXTURES. Jan. 29, 30—Gore R,.C.
