WELCOME WEEK
SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION Newtown Park was the scene of a successful winding-up function on Saturday night to terminate the series of, attractions arranged for Welcome Week. The chief attractions were motor and cycle sports, and the side shows were all aglow with light and action, as the voices of the showmen proclaimed the virtues of their own particular shows. An amateur Blondin walked tho tight rope, and the woodchoppers competed for the -£25 in prizes. The Port Nicholson Band enlivened the intervals with musical contributions, which enticed couples to jazz on the green. Tho events followed with the greatest interest nere the motor cyclo and sidecar driving competitions, the speed and skill cf the numerous riders in following the difficult course arranged by the committee eliciting much, admiration. Mr. G. Mitchell, secretary to the committee, left nothing undone to < nsure the success of the evening. ‘
The following were the results of tho various events: —•
Handicap Chopping.—D. Pretty was on the scratch mark, and eight other competitors received from three to ninety seconds start. They had to cut through a pinus insignis log 16im in diameter. W. Peck was the winner, tailing Imin. 6sec (including 3sec. handicap), D. Pretty following him closely, on a second behind. Motor Cycle Events.—Twelve competed in the motor cycle and sidecar driving event, in which two pointe were deducted for every peg knocked down, and one point for every five seconds over two minutes taken in the round. A. Broe proved the winner with 201 J points; W. Batr, 198 points, 2; H. J. Rod, 197£ points, 3. In the solo event for motor cycles, L. Southwood, 205 points, was first: B. Wilkinson, 200 J points, 2; T. McCausland, 199} points, 3. Fourteen started. Mile Relay Race. —Olympic Harriers (P. Wilson, Perston, Jeffrey, Campbell), 1; Athletic Club (Todd, Stevenson, Elliott, Melrose), 2. The other teams were: W.A.C.C. Selwyn, Hutt A, Hutt B. Won by about 5 yards. Time, 3min. 56 2-ssec. Bicycle Events. —Mile Bicycle Race: T. Flett, 25yds., 1; S. Harrison, 25 yds., 2; Bakewell, 85yds., 3. Also started: W. Clarke and W. Clouston, 40yds.; C. Hall, 130yds.; J. Morris, 170yds. Won by 5 yards. , Time, 3 min. 30}secs. Two Miles Bicycle Race: T. Flett, scr., 1; S. Harrison, scr., 2; G. Bright, 75yds., 3. Also started: W. Clouston, 75yds.; Bakewell, 130 yds.; J. Morris, 260yds. Won by 25 yards.} Time, smin. 12 4-ssec. Three Mile Race: G. W. Dome, Gsyds., 1; W. H. Anderson, scr., 2; L. C. Todd, 200yds., 3. Also started: R. Rose, 65 yds.; Woodcock, 200yds.; E. ,La Frontju 200yds. Won by 40 yards, third '3O yards away. Time, 15min. 51 2-sseo.
Motou*-driving( Competition.—About 30 cars lined un for the competition, and a display of excellent driving and manoeuvring by experts, both men and ladies, was witnessed. Class A (heavy cars): Pickering (Buick), 210 points, 1: Moncrieff (Buick), 210, 2; Carter (Willys Knight), 195, 3.
