AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEW ZEALAND TEAM FOR HOBART FINAL ARRANGEMENTS A special meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur _ Athletic Association was held last, night to make final arrangements in connection with the Dominion team to compete at the Australasian championships at Hobart. Mr. A. T. Davies presided and there were also present:— Messrs. 0. C. Mazengarb, R. Connop, F. Wilton, A. B. Sievwright, H. Amos, and V. Hugo (hon. secretary). The Otago centre telegraphed, stating that McKenzie had beaten McIntosh in the walk at Dunedin, and • inquiring if McKenzie was being overlooked for Australia. The chairman said that McKenzie had been considered by the selection committee, but as his latest performances were in 1922 they could not consider him. On the other hand, McIntosh had been doing well at evening meetings, and had put up a fine performance last Saturday, which quite justified his selection. Mr. Willon said they were working in the dark, as they had not seen the men competing against each other. Mr. Sievwright: This is the. result of the Australasian championships being held so early in tbe season. The chairman: It is the result of the ■ New Zealand championships not being held before the Australasian championships. It was decided to reply to Otago that McKenzie’s claim had been considered, but the selectors had no recent performances of his over a mile, and none over three miles. It was further decided to inform Otago that Wellington centro was finding £25 towards Mclntosh’s expenses, and if Otago would do the same McKenzie would be included in the team. It was decided to give the team for Hobart a send-off at 10 a.m. on Friday next. J. W. McHolm was appointed man ager of the team, and he and H. E*. Wilson were appointed to represent New Zealand on the Board of Control.
