Fourteen men and 1 three ladies faced the starter, but onlv seven competitors, including one ladv. Miss Imandt, completed the distance. ' . The water was cold, and a brisk south--1 erly hindered the contestants in their ' | swim from Queen’s Wharf to Clyde Quay 1 . Wharf, but was a help to them in the ' journey across to Taranaki Street Wharf ■ and back to Queen’s Wharf. Miss E. Hunt and Miss V. Brodie, 1 with a limit start of 18 minutes from the scratch man. When Murrell dived over Misses Hunt and Brodie, swimming strong trudgeon strokes, were hut specks in the distance. Blakeney, Lavelle. Howie, Russell, Shannon, Dawkins. Mollier. and Murrell Pocock and Shannon finding the cold too much for them, pulled out. Miss Hunt, still followed by Miss Brodie, made a good course across to Taranaki Street, and had an appreciable lead as she touched at Queen’s Wharf, the end of the first time round. Miss fmandt, Morpeth, Mason. Barrett, Blakeney, McCarthy, Lavelle, Howie, Russell, and Murrell, followed, while Look and Dawkins and Miss Brodie, next in order, had had enough. Morneth. Mason. McHardy. Murrell. Miss Imandt, Miss Hunt, Russell, Howie, Lavelle. McHardy and Lavelle were picked up. Half-way to Taranaki Street Wharf, Miss Hunt entered one of the boats. Blakeney left Taranaki Street Wharf for the home swim with a good lead from Murrell, who was gradually closing up by means of a powerful trudgeon, a stroke which he had used all the way. With' two hundred yards still to go. they were on even terms, and, due to the tide and the wash -from the revolving propellers of tho s.s. Karori, they were scarcely about to move. They camo up along the side of the Queen’s Wharf with Murrell slowly but surely drawing away to win by about 12 yards. Morpeth was about 60 yards further back, third.
