BAY OF ISLANDS AND WAIRIO MEETINGS

TRENTHAM TRACK WORK

J NOTES AND COMMENTS WORK ON TRENTHAM TRACKS Beautiful weather conditions favoured training operations at Trentham on Saturday morning. The trial grass was used by most of the trainers, but a few horses were sent on tine tau. The best gallops of the morning were dono bv: Gloaming. ! Enthusiasm. Queen March.. ■ Nigger Minstrel. I Merit was first out, and ran a halfS mile in 50sec. She pulled up all right. il and will no doubt be a starter in the | Ruapehu Handicap. j Basso and Sunshot left six furlongs | behind in Imin. 1S 2-osec.. The former I had the better of the deal. Peach j Brandy and Black Rod took Imin. I 19sec. to cover a similar distance. j Piquant and Glimpse on the tan went i four furlongs in 52sec. I Star Ranger was in front of Laughing Stock at the end of six furlongs that'took Imin. 17 l-ssec. Uarawock was no use to Bayana over seven furlongs, left behind in Imin. I 32sec. Gloaming was the centre of all eyes when he appeared. He looks well, and has lost a lot of his one-time waywardness on the track. He cantered around the tan, and afterwards on the grass was sent four furlongs. This he did in businesslike style, and the journey took 48sec. Lake Uru and Vindictive went six furlongs in Imin. 19sec. Quest was in front of Slump over four furlongs, which was negotiated in 51 sec. Highland and Parody were not Bent against the clock. Bright Eyes and Ares took 50sec. to get over half a mile. Palestrina was going away from Gay Juliet at the end of six furlongs that took Imin. 18sec. / Queen March had a little to spare from Nigger Minstrel at the end of half a milo, left behind in 49 2-ssoc. 'Fukia and Glenross wore sent a similar distance, and they took 51sec., the former having all the better of it. Muraahi was too good for a companion over six furlongs. The time was Imin. 22sec. A. mile, by Stream and Last Crust was covered in Imin. 45 l-ssec. Degage, Pleasant Surprise, • nd Pantrymaid finished in tnat order in a four furlong task, that took 51 2-sseC. Gay Queen, alone, covered a similar distance in olsec. Enthusiasm took Imin. 42scc. to leave a mile behind, the last seven taking Imin. 29sec. The Summer Cup winner did her task well, and she looks like being at her best- on the day. Kilminster and Jackeroo was the order at the end of six furlongs that took Imitf. 17 2-ssec. White Comet was not pushed over five iurlongs to do Imin. sscc. Diamond Ring and Bagdad finished in that order over seven furlongs, run in Imin. 31sec. After breakfast Loughrea was given strong work. Mantua ran home from the four furlongs in 15sec. Manchester took Imin. 21sec. to go six furlongs. Backsheesh, and Rene Al avis ran four furlongs in 49sec. Roseday was cantered a couple of rounds, -but was not asked to make time. Motley was out early, but was not worked. She looks well, and has quite recovered from the complaint that prevented her racing in the Foal Stakes at jEllerslip. Civility, Siaosi, and Filette wore given an easy time by Trainer Russell. Practically all the first-day acceptors are at headquarters now. Quest only Trentham-trained horso nominated for the Egmont Cup. For the Flying Handicap Ares and Solfanello have been accorded an entry. Glimpse, Vindictive, Bright Eyes, and Sunshot have been entered for the ' Nolan Cup, a £4OO hack race. Judging by the entries received for the Egmont meeting, a number of Auckland horses will make the trip. The paragraph, in this column on Saturday morning stating that luncheon .would not be served at Trentham was ( not correct. It it the intention of the club to serve both luncheon and after- • noon tea for patrons. ; Prior to coming to Trentham Motley was responsible for a nice effort at I Wanganui. With Veil for a companion, she ran four furlongs in 49 3-5 I sec. New Zealand-bred horses in Kilkenny Lass (a sister to Motley) and Uncle ■ Alex, filled the minor places in the ; Challenge Stakes, run at Randwick on Saturday. The winner, Laneffe, though well up in the weights, was a poor performer last season. ' Nigger Minstrel has impressed the ! track watchers in lus efforts the last I couple of morning, and all predict big , things of the Lowry youngster. i Judging by the work he is doing, i Last Crust will be a starter in the ’ Douro Cup. ! Civility, who is given an outside ; chance in the Telegraph Handicap, I will be ridden by D. Watt. Glentruin looks very nice to the eye, and though she has a steadier of 9st. 131 b. in the Telegraph Handicap, she may make her presence felt before the post is reached. Kerb, who is niboly handicapped in . the Telegraph Handicap, won a race at . last year’s meeting, downing a hot , order in Songbird. In some quarters ; she is expected to run prominently to- ; morrow. ••

Skyrocket, sire of the colt for which Mr. E. Riddiford recently paid 1000 guineas, at Ellerslie, is standing the season in England at a fee of £2OO. Skyrocket is by Sunstar from Ala id of the Mist by Cyllene from Sceptre. The colt, who is a likely looking sort, is to race as Sky Blue, Kohu has been started going again at Hastings, and the chestnut gelding, who is still under the control of J. Griffith, looks in good order to start his toil in view of a preparation for future lepping contests. Pukctoi, who downed Glimpse at Tauherenikau, has had a change of trainers, and is now in charge of F. Carmont at Foxton. Lady Blissful, who won the Wairio Cup on Saturday, 'is a fairly useful sort, but last season she had a penchant for running seconds. Palamon, who won the event in 1921 and 1922, is engaged in the high weight handicap at Trentham to-morrow. A. J. McFlinn is to be present for the first two days at Trentham. He will then return north to ride at Takapuna, which opens on Saturday next. Anticipate, who mot with an accident at Marlon, has recovered enough, to be sent 'home. It is thought that the mishap was caused by the gelding knuckling over when being pulled up 'after the race. D. Cotton has been engaged to ride Winning Hit in the Wellington Cup. It was intended to race Dutch Cloclr at the Wellington meeting, but as she went sore the trip has been abandoned. M. McCarten, who rode Glentruin to victory in the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, will be associated with the Eng-lish-bred mare in her efforts at Trent ham. RICCARTON TRACK NOTES The weather was fine for training operations at Riccarton on Saturday norning (says the “Sun”), but verylittle fast work was undertaken, most of the horses getting through strong half-pace exercise. Royal Star and Boadicea were companions over a very useful nine furlongs, both doing it well. Murihaupo and Solvency were galloped five furlongs, whichi they did nicely. Footfall and Starmist were sent io' gather over five furlongs, finishing well. Mason’s horses got through steady work.

After breakfast R. Longley galloped Gay Life and Rigel six furlongs, both pulling up well.' 1 Finora got through good useful work. Her trainer, R. Ellis, is not inclined to make the Willington trip. Christmas has Kenmore in work again, and the injury he received to his knee while being shipped from the boat going to the last Wellington spring meeting has quite disappeared. Wuikie’s Best and First Dart, in Emerson’s stable, were given useful work together. Royal Star, with Bondsman and a chestnut gelding by Solferino —Tango, were hunted round ths schooling ring, and jumped well. The latter pair afterwards jumped two of the schooling hurdles, the Tango gelding hitting each very hard. BAY OF ISLANDS RACES LADY PATIENCE WINS THE CUP Bx Telegraph—Press Association.
