ARMY TRAINING

CENTRAL COMMAND RIFLE MEETING Throughout New Zealand the system of training Territorial? and Cadets to shoot as near as" possible under the conditions likely to be met with in actual warfare is now being carried out. Local rifle meetings are first held in the three commands, and representatives will then be chosen from the most efficient men for the Dominion Army Rifle Meeting in March next. Tho Central Command annual rifle meeting will , open at Trantham on Thursday, . February 14, and will extend'over the two following days, under the presidency of Colonel-Com-mandant Melville; C. 8., D.S.O. Tho first day’s programme comprises cadetshooting in the morning and afternoon and machine-gun matches for Territorials in the afternoon. On the second day there wiU be Territorial matches in the morning and teams’ matches in the afternoon, and on the concluding day the morning will be occupied with the command and Senior Cadet championships, and prizes won will be presented in the afternoon. Lieut.-Colonel J. H. Whyte, D. 5.0., D.0.M., will be the executive officer, and the committee comprises Major F. A Wood. M.C.. Major W. I. K. Jennings, D. 5.0., Captain D. E. Bremner, M.C., and Captain O. H. Mead, D.S.O. The secretary is the Hon. Lieut. A. J. King (Palmerston North), and the treasurer Captain S. V. Trask. Entries close on February 7, and Intending competitors are required to enter for all matches laid down for their particular category. The railway passes will be issued to all bona-fide competitors from any railway station within the boundaries of the central command. Territorial and Senior Cadet officers may shoot in the Territorial series of matches, but will not be eligible to compete in the teams’ matches or win the Territorial champion challenge belt. Arrangements will be made to accommodate those who desire it at Trentham, for the provision of meals at the lowest possible cost, but competitors are required to bring their own bedding, blankets, etc., and pay their own expenses. Blankets may be obtained on loan at a cost of fid. each. Spectators will bo permitted to view the competitions.
