THE RACING WORLD

REEFTON MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

The Otaki trainer, D. Webster, came to light at Grey mow th on Wednesday, when ho won races with Probate and Bestir, a dead-heater in Radiac, and a second with Matareka.. The three-year-old Anticipate, who broke down badly at Marton, is still

in such a bad way that his owner cannot get him home. Mr. J. B. Gaisford is experiencing bad luck with his team this season, Dodo being sore, and First Born and Koauau both carry the marks of recent t neounters with hr. bed wire fences. Fortunately Mark Time is standing up to his work at Hawera all Tight. At the Koatanui yearling bale two years back the chestnut filly by surd —Mimique was secured by Mr. G. D. Greenwood for 400gns. This was Parody, who won for her owner 1700 bovs. in stake money at the recent Ellerslie meeting. As a two-year-old Parody won 645 sovs., and as a three-year-old, with half the season to go, 1975 sovs., making the filly’s winnings to date 2620 sovs.

Fingoland, a four-year-old gelding by Finland from Aurarius, has been sold for 50 sovs., and is to go to Australia. At one time the half-brother to Desert Gold looked like turning out a good one, but he failed to run up to expectations. i The Riccarton trainer, J. McCombe, is endeavouring to dispose of Sunny Loch, Geranial, and The Cheat. The firstnamed is a beautiful jumper.

The hard gqing has knocked Sir Roseibery up, and he is being treated to a spell.

The ex-Hawke’s Bay horse Anomaly is finding the going too hard down south, and is not to be laced till the tracks soften up a little.

The well-known Sydney jockey, Albert Wood, was seriously injured through a fall in a two-year-old race at Randwick last month. He sustained concussion, contusions to the back, and abrasions to the tight knee.

A race that is worthy of special attention on. the Dunedin Cup programme is the President’s Handicap of 40(1 sovs., one mile and a quarter. This represents a pleasing attempt on the part of the club to encourage stayers who have not yet emerged from the hack class, as it is restricted to horses that must comply with hack renditions according to the Rules of Racing.

Lady Medallist (St. Alwyne—Diploma), winner of the Caulfield Cup of 1911, has foaled a brown colt to the Melbourne Cup winner, Piastre. AV lion racing in New Zealand as a two, three, and four-year-old, Lady Medallist won numerous races for her owner-trainer, T. H. Prosser, of Porirua, including the Wanganui Guineas, Taranaki Cup (twice), Masterton Cup, Marlborough Cup, Higgio Handicap (Wanganui), Wanganui Stakes, Wellington Handicap, and Wellington Racing Club Handicap. The final meetings of the English racing season carried their principal interest in the race for supremacy between Donoghue and Elliot to top the list of winning riders. With three days’ racing to go Donoghue drew level with Elliot, but neither rode a winner afterwards. Donoghue got nearest, as he was second in three races whilst Elliot failed to ride a placed horse. With limited opportunities on Sir George Hunter’s station at Porangahau, Crown Imperial II is getting winners that promise to stay. Crown Star flag won twice over ten furlongs, and Imperial Spark ran a mile at Wairarapa the first tiine of asking. Both trace hack to the well-performed Albany—Tell Tale mare Whisper, who could both sprint and stay. Crown Star is out of Tattle, a daughter of the Wellingto’i Cup winner, Mahakl, And. Imperial Spark is out ef Electric Spark, by Electric Light (by Wonderland from Searchlight), from Little Whisper, a sister to Tattle. Crown Imperial 11, who is Iged the right way-to get stayers, is by Martagon (sire of Martian) from Macaroon), by Marco —St. Regalia, by St. Frusquin —Rosalie, by Rosicrucian. Crown Imperial II was imported by Mr. Goring Johnston at the same time as Panmure. Otacre, the winner of the six furlongs Cairlrington )! takes! In New South Wales on December 29, in Imin. 124 sec., was bought as a yearling by Mrs. A. Hordejn for lOOOgns. As "a two-year-old he only won one race and one the following year. He was given two years’ spell. Absurdum, the New Zealand colt, who ran nowhere in the Carrington Stakes, dead-heated with Otacre in the Flying Handicap on the second day at Randwick. At Adelaide, Bitalli, the last Melbourne Cup winner, with 9st. t>.p, had to succumb to Stand By, a three-year-old by T.anius, carrying Cst. 101 b. King of the Forest, winner of the Summer Cup on Boxing Day, is seven years old, and won the same lace two years ago.

Four full-brothers, Alacosita, Tagala, Thrinax, and Kilbano, met »in the Christmas Handicap at Adelaide on Boxing Day, when Alacosia won. Mr. Currie purchased l the clam of Parody—Mimique in Sydney as a yearling for lOOgns.

, Motley is a full-sister to Kilkenny ■ Loss, a winner in the Flying Handi- • cap in. Sydney on New Year’s Day. For conversing together prior to a race, the Queensland Trotting Club fined a bookmaker’s clerk and a jockey £25 each. False Alarm (Demosthenes or Finland—Gossip) won the .Koonary Welter, one mile, at Caulfield, on Boxing Day, in Imin. 41sec. Opaloid, who has so far proved of little account since coming to New Zealand, was responsible for a (really good gallop over a cricuit on the No. 3 grass at Ellerslie the other morning, lie will race at the Bay „of Islands meeting next week. He has galloped well in private on previous occasions, only to race moderately. ’Hie two-year-old by Thurnham from Housewife, who fell to the bid of J. Williamson at the Alison sale, was purchased on behalf of the Dannevirke sportsman, Mr. H. Gaisford, who recently returned from a trip to England. Mr. Gaisford has also affected the purchase of the two-year-old Serene (by Seromond —Bine Stocking). The youngsters were railed south to their new home early in the week. Pvtianapa showed excellent form at the Ellerslie Christmas meeting (says the “Herald”). The son of I’olvdanmn does not figure in the nominations for the Wellington Cup. He is entered for the Anniversary Handicap (one mile) on Cup dav, and is engaged in *he Wellington Racing Club Handicap (one mile and three furlongs), the chief event of the second day’s programme. When Ruapapa appeared nt Ellerslie he looked as if he would be improved with racing. The form displayed of late by Winning Hit has Ween of such a moderate character that his chance of reaching the stake-earning stage in the near future appears to be remote (says the “Herald”). Ballymoy, the imported filly by Sonnin'g out of Ballvhill. purchased recently by Mr. 11. Friedlander for 350 guineas, will receive her ?>reparation at the hands of J. Williamson. Ballymoy is being broken in, and will be ridden within the course of a few days. Te Hiwi and Heatherford, who are at present being trained at Ellerslie by J. Williamson, .will probably be sent across to Sydney after the Takapuna meeting. Both geldings are owned by Mr. V. Casey.
