FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE IN BRITAIN
DRASTIC SLAUGHTERING OF CATTLE ISOLATION FOUND USELESS Br Telegkaph—Press Association. -OoPihioht. London, December 13. The drastic cattle slaughtering which is proceeding in consequence of tho continuous serious spread of foot-and-mouth disease is evoking criticism of the Government’s policy. A motion was submitted at a meeting of the Council of Agriculture in favour of the substitution of isolation for slaughter. The Minister, Sir. Robert Sanders, in opposing the motion, declared that the Government’s experience had shown that isolation on a large scale was useless. The Government was prepared to continue the slaughter policy up to at least £1,500,000 in compensation. . . , . The farmers’ motion was rejected almost unanimously. There were 58 fresh outbreaks today, making a total of 1074, in thirtynine counties. Up to date 70,000 animals have bsrin slaughtered, including 35,000 cattle.—Reuter.
