EARL OF CAVAN.
CANCELLATION OF TOUR SPECULATIONS OF THE PRESS ABANDONMENT OF SINGAPORE BASE SUGGESTED [ By Telegraph.— Press Association. Copybight. London, December 13., In view of the present circumstances, the proposed visit of the Earl of Cavan, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, to the Dominions, has been cancelled. —Reuter. (Reo. December 14, 8.5 p.m.) London, December 14. Some newspapers connect the cancellation of the Earl of Cavan’s visit to Singapore with the abandonment of the scheme. In well-informed circles the reason is given that in view of any change of Government it was undesirable to deprive the new War Minister of his principal military adviser. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. London, December 13. The “Daily News” interprets tho cancellation of the Earl of Cavan’s tour as heralding the possible abandonment of the Singapore base. It says the Government has “seen a red light” in respect of this “wasteful and foolish project” in the present circumstances. This means that there is now a majority in the .House of Commons opposed to tho dangerous gamble of spending millions which are needed to meet economic realities at Home.— Sydney “Sun” Cable.
