FIRST MEETING OF SEASON

BRIGHT, INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES

The first afternoon sports gathering held under the auspices of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association took place at Athletic Park on Saturday before about 700 spectators. The finishes in most of. tho events were good, and although the times were not out of the wav, there was a consistency about the participants that kept interest well sustained. Leadbetter and) , the College champion, Jenkins, qualified for the final of the 100 yards handicap. but E. G. Guy captured the event in <gre.it style, Leadbetter drawing third place. The veteran H, E. Wilson in the 120 Yards Hurdles fell behind Whyte at the tape in the final after leading over the last hurdle. There was a great surprise in the mile handicap. which was won by D. Priestly. In the mile Cycle Handicap T. Davis (the limit man), with 160 yards, _ won all the way with comfort. The ladies’ events produced some stirring finishes and revealed Miss M. Hay vice at the top of her form. ’Varsity, who challenged Wellington for the Heenan Baton, were successful in annexing the inter-club relay race. Wellington leads in the Dewar Shield competition.
