SANDERS CUP TRIALS [ FIFTH RACE TO PEGGY The fifth local trial in connection with the Sanders Memorial Cup was sailed on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a decisive win for Peggy. This boat has now won three of the five trials sailed. Manv alterations had been made in the crews of the competitors. Tho crews were as follow.— Peggy.—Bruce White (captain), R. Rountree, F. Glover, and. J. Best. Claire. —A. Johnston (captain), J. McMillan, Robinson, and Harland. Eynin.—A. Bailey (captain), N. Rountree, G. Spouse and Wilson. The course was from the Clyde Q,uay Wharf, thence to and around Jerningham Buoy, thence to and around tho Rama, moored off Kaiwar.ra, and back to a buoy moored off the Clyde Quay Wharf. This was repeated. The boats crossed the starting hue nt 3.17 p.m. There was'a fresh easterly breeze blowing, and Peggy soon drew away. Eynin kept to second place, while Claire dropped to last through standing in too close to Oriental Bay and losing the wind. At Jerningham Buoy, Eynin, was Imin. 35sec. behind Peggy, while Claire was 3min. ssec. behind the leader. Peggy increased her lead to the Rama, and rounded for the run home 4min. 30sec. ahead of Eynin, and smin. 15sec. ahead of Claire It was now plainly evident that Peggy could not be caught, and the interest centred on the fight for second place. Although Claire commenced badly she was making up time on Eynin. Peggy struck mild batches on her way to Clyde Quay, but rounded the . home buoy 2min. 30sec. ahead of Eyrin and 3mm’. 50s ec. ahead of Claire. Peggy continued well in the lead, rounding Rama, in the second round, smin. 25 sec. ahead of Claire, and 7min. 20sec. ahead of Eynin. _ Peggy crossed the winning line 4min. 55sec. ahead of Claire, and 6min. 55sec. ahead of Eynin. Peggy sailed an excellent race. She ran right away from .the other yachts between the buoys, but did not do so well with her spinnaker set. The judges, Messrs. A. J. Aldred, W. Duncan, and D. Wall followed the race in Mr. Aldred’s launch. TRIALS IN OTHER CENTRES BONA WINS DOUBLE AT AUCKLAND By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, December 2. The first two of the series of trials to decide the defender of tho Sanders Cup were held yesterday over a windward and leeward course, the Rona winning both against Joan and Queen March. The weather was ideal and there was a whole sail breeze. In the first test Queen, March worked 1 to windward of Rona until the latter altered her trim, which enabled her to close up on the leader. At the first mark Rona was ten seconds behind, with Joan another seven seconds away. On the run Joan passed both rivals, but on the beat back again Rona went into the lead, followed by Queen March. At the finish Rona led by 13 seconds from Queen March, which was 39 seconds ahead of Joan. In the second race Queen March held the lead across the harbour, where Joan took charge. Queen March again headed Joan, with Rona 45 seconds behind the latter. The same order was kept on the run to King’s Wharf, Queen March rounding the mark boat 21 seconds ahead of Joan, Rona being ten seconds astern. On the beat back Rona sailed through Joan’s lee, and when they broke tacks Queen March just crossed Rona. The leaders now fought out a great race, Queen March rounding the mark boat eight seconds ahead) of Rona, and Joan 22 seconds later. Queen March kept the lead until halfway across to the finishing line, where she was passed by Rona. Within a hundred, yards Queen March almost ' drew level with Rona. but the latter managed to maintain her lead long enough to cross the line one second ahead of Queen March, which was 41 seconds ahead of Joan. LYTTELTON TRIALS COMMENCE
SECRET WINS FIRST ROUND. Christchurch, December 2. The first trial race for the Sanders Cup was sailed at Lvttelton yesterday. Three, boats competea—Linnet, Secret, and Lapwing. A stiff nor’-easter was blowing and there was a heavy sea. In the first round Linnet carried away her peak halyards, and lost seven minutes and considerable ground. Secret finished first, with Linnet only 20 seconds behind. Lapwing was a long distance behind. The second race is being sailed! late this afternoon. TWO RACES HELD AT DUNEDIN WINIFRED SCORES A DOUBLE WIN. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Dunedin, December 2. Tivb further Sanders Cup trials were sailed on Saturday and resulted in a double -win for Winifred, while Heather was second in each case. For the second race the skippers and crewsof the four competing boats were cliangcd round.
