RENT AND THE COST OF LIVING

-4 At the Arbitration Court, Mr. J. Read, mentioned the general labourers’ dispute. He said that the only pointe referred to the Court were wages, and a few minor ones such as classification, term of award, etc. The union asked that the case should be brought on at tho end. of the present sitting, and it was decided that argument should be taken on the assessment of the cost of living, especially rent, as it was thought the trade was suffering injustice on’that account. Mr. Justice Frazer hardly thought it was much use whipping a dead horse and Endeavouring to revise the estimates of the cost of living, especially in regard to rents. Mr. W. Grenfell pointed out that the Conciliation Council had only considered the claims the day before, and it was questionable whether they would lie ready to proceed. The matter was held over till Monday. When the adjournment of the seamen’s dispute was mqptioned, Mr. W. T. Young remarked that the cost of living might be down by the date fixed (February), and His Honour fervently expressed the wish that it might be so.
