Y.M.C.A. GYMNASIUM CLASSES
The annual social in connection with the gymnasium classes of the Wellington Y.M.C.A. was held at the Willis Street institution last evening, there being a good attendance. Mr. E. P. Hay, vice-president, who occupied the chair, stated that th? board had been delighted with the efficiency of the work carried on under the i/umagement of the physical instructor, Mr. J. A. Duffy. There had been 2000 more attendances at the classes than in the previous year. He congratulated tho pupils on their loyal and whole-liearted enthusiasm in their work, and said that he knew that the instructor was the right man in the right place. Mr. J. L. Hay (general secretary) also paid a tribute to the instructor and pupils, and especially referred to the manner in which the classes had co-operated with outside organisations during the year. Mr. Duffy heartily thanked the officers on behalf of the class and himself for the kind things said. He had been asked to assist in the military tournament in March next, and he was going to ask twelve of each sex, who could go into training in March, to volunteer that evening.
The class then presented Mr. Duffy with a handsome electric lamp as a token of their esteem and the good fueling existing between them. A short concert was given, the programme being:—Recitation, “All About It.” and musical monologue, “Should Women Tell.” Miss Williams; song, “One Fleeting Hour,” Miss Carruthers. with violin obbligato by Miss G. Cooney; and encore, “My Dear Soul” ; violin solo. “Leoncavello Serenade, “Miss G. Cooney, and encore “Perpetuo Mobile” ; recitations, Miss Lissnck, encore song, “Wonderland”; Miss E. Cooney and Miss Helyer played the accompaniments. The following were the recipients of prizes Gymnasium champion. D. Halley; men’s championship, E. J. Jones; ladv gymnasium champion, Miss E. Ayling, T. Miss G. Hoare, 2; lady’s novice, Miss P. Dawson, 1, .Miss M. Barr-rtt. 2; men’s novice, C. Gardiner, 1. D. Holmes, 2: ticket-selling competition, Miss Tucker. After the presentation of prizes, the young folk present were entertained with a number of games, followed by supper.
