PONEKE FOOTBALL CLUB SMOKER

THE GROUND QUESTION. Tho measure of success achieved on the Rugby ladder by the Poiieke Club was celebrated at a smoke concert on Saturday night. The Hon. Dr. A. K. Newman, M.L.C., presided over a large gathering of members and enthusiasts. Among those present were Mr. S. S. Dean (chairman of the N.ZrR.F.U.), Mr. W. J. Hardhman (W.R.F.U.), and Mr. S. Nicholls, a foundation member of the club. Speakers testified to the success which had attended the club’s activities since its inception, and the general wish expressed was one of prosperity in the future. . . Replying to a suggestion that the local controlling authority was inclined to regard the financial aspect of the gam©’ a trifle too severely, Mr Hardham pointed out that the union was faced with the necessity of improving the. ground accommodation and ccping with tho influx of younger players. Mr. Dean mentioned that thq inion at the present time was negotiating for the acquisition of a ground at Lower Hutt.

A valuable hint to coaches and players about to leave the fetive side of the game was offered by a speaker in the course of a reply to the toast of the Referees’ Association. “It would bt? a good thing for coaches,” he averred, “to attend the weekly meetings of the Referees’ Association, and gain an insight into the interpretation that is to be placed on a certain rule, and thus we will obtain uniform coaching together with uniform refereeing. Members who are not playing again next year are also invited to come along. We have about 70 matches to provide referees for each week, and it often happens that one man has to take two or more games. Don’t drop out, but do a little more for Rugby — remain in the game per medium of the Referees’ Association.” (Applause.) Advantage was taken of the opportunity to make a presentation of Mr. J. Shearer on the occasion of his marriage, and to present medals to M. Turner and G. Dailey of the intermediate and third grade teams. Eulogistic reference was made to the services rendered by Mr. A. Griffiths. The following toast list was honoured: “The King,” “The Poneke Club,” N.Z. and W.R.F.U.,” “Our Opponents,” “Rerferees’ Association and St. John Ambulance,” and the “Press.” A bright musical programme further enhanced tho evening’s entertainment.
