HARBOUR COLLISION

1 MURITAI COLLIDES WITH NARINGA When backing out from the Eastbourne Ferry Company s wharf at 10.15 o’clock yesterday morning, the new steamer Muritai ran, stern hrs , into the 6000-ton liner Naringa, moored at No. 1 north Queen’s Wharf/ She hit the Naringa on the starboard side about five feet above the water, and dented one of the plates about eight inches deep. The iron band around the Muritai was twisted at the point or the impact. , It is stated that no structural damage was sustained by the Muritai- rhe collision, according to an officer of the Ferry Company, was due to a defect in the engine room, and was no fault of tho navigation officers. The extent of the damage to the Naringa could not be ascertained yesterday. It is believpd that other plates were affected, but nothing definite can bo reported until the cargo is removed from the hold. The Federal Company, who are the local agents, reported that the damage would probably bo repaired when the Naringa returned again to the United Kingdom. The Muritai made the trip to Day’s Bay after the accident and later reirned to town, and tied up for the rest of the day. This was on account of the bad weather.
