EXPORT SHIPMENTS FOR PAST YEAR TRADE WITH SOUTH AMERICA The shipment by the Opawa of 3000 cases of late apples, mostly Sturmera and Dohertys, to Rio de Janiero on Saturday last, marked the final dispatch of the season’s apple crops. 'l'he Fruitgrowers’ Federation shipped during the year 102,490 cases to England, of which 99,502 went to London and 2988 to Bull. To South America were sent 32,817 cases, 27,924 going to Buenos Aires. 1865 to Montevideo, and 3028 to Rio de Janiero. In addition to this, 12,000 cases were shipped to other countries, malting the total shipments for 1923 147,307 cases. Nelson forwarded 94,800 cases, and. Otago 15,015. Then came Hawke’s Bay, 9937; Wairarapa. 7870; Marlborough, 4643; Canterbury, 490; and Auckland, 792. The shipment which left by the Opawa was forwarded to Mr. W. A. Tate, representative in South America of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, who will dispose of the fruit at Rio. The prices received for the Port Napier shipment to London have given satisfaction to growers. About 250 of the cases were sent bv Mr. E. H. Williams, of Hastings. The fruit, Winter Nelis, arrived in excellent condition, fetching from 275. to 30s. per crate (about two-thirds of a bushel). This means about 15s. net per crate for the fruit. The Remuera’s shipment, on the other hand, arrived on April 9 in very had due, it is alleged, to variations in temperature during the voyage. x x nr x The Baran gas shipment to Montevideo arrived on June 1 in splendid condition, and averaged 14s. 6d. per bushel case, c.i.f. This was a small shipment of 400 cases of apples.
