ENGLAND’S RECOVERY

THE RUHR PROBLEM

AUSTRALIAN’S SUGGESTED

SOLUTION

“It is a pleasure to record the improvement in the industrial outlook in England during the past two years,” says a well-known Australian metal magnate, who arrived by the Tahiti yesterday, en route to his home in Sydney. He offers a suggested solution for the difficulty that has arisen in the Ruhr.

Mr. T. H. Kelly, who has been closely associated with the tin market for many years, returned sjenerday from his second visit to Great Britain during two years. Interviewed on coming ashore from the Tahiti, ho said he was profoundly impressed with England’s recovery during that period. He compared tho slump period with the prosperity of to-day, saying that unemployment had greatly decreased in the interval, and that currency, manufacture, and production were rapidly nearing the pre-war rate. “These are still anxious moments, however, for Great Britain,” he said. “Nobody knows what is going to happen in Europe. The Ruhr problem is still unsolved. The only solution 1 can see is for the German Government to bring pressure to bear cn tl-e capitalists to bring back the capital they have locked up in neutral countlies. There are enormous sums, which are not available for taxation or for the payment of reparations. The French are hopeful, by putting pressure on the Ruhr, they may force some of these credits back to pay the Allies’ dues.”
