HUTT ROAD
IMPROVEMENT PROPOSALS
“Those who have, been looking for the commencement of the Hutt Road immediately will bo disappointed,” says a report by Mr. G. Mitchell to the Central Progress League. “I understand that it is now proposed to put down a bitumen road five inches thick, three inches of black base and "two inches surfacing, and 21ft. wide, with concrete curbing at each side. “There is no suitable plant here for such work, and tenders are now being called for a bitumen mixing and heating plant capable of 800 square yards per day. Tenders close on June 11, delivery to be made and the plant to bo running six months after, which brings us to December next before the plant will be running. It is proposed, however, to use the plant on other work, such as Thorndon Quay, for the remainder of the season up to May, 1924, and to start the Hutt Road in Septemher, 1924. If the concrete kerbing is put in and work generally prepared beforehand, there does not seem any reason why the road should not be completed in the season September, 1924, to May, 1925. “Thera is some diversity of opinion about the width of the road, btit as 10ft. is recognised as a standard for one vehicle track, 21ft. would give a two-way track, _ and if the road is to be made wider it must be 30ft. to give a three-way track.”
