MEDICATED WINES
Sales of medicated wines by a Bay chemist, Edward Francis Haley, were responsible for his being charged on summons in the Magistrate s Court yesterday with selling liquor without a license. The defendant, who did not appear, was represented by Mr. I. G. Prichard. . , . Sub-Inspector Cummings saad thac defendant had carried on business in tlie no-license area of Lyall Bay m a chemist. t Two bottles of medicated wine h* had sold at 7s. 6d. each, when submitted to the analyst were found to contain 33 per cent, and 30 per cent, ro spectively of alcohol. “The breach waa very probably a technical one/’ added the sub-inspector. “The law is different where licensed areas are concerned.” , . Mr. Prichard said there had been no attempt at concealment. The defendant had purchased several dozen bottles of the wine and had sold a number in an open way to customers. The Magistrate recorded a conviction and ordered the defendant to pay oosts amounting to £1 Bs.
