A COMPARISON WITH AUCKLAND

At the recent meeting held in connection with the preposed Wellington carnival, a reference was mad© to tho manner in which Auckland was “boosted,” especially in regard to shipping, it having been asserted that 1,200,000 tons of cargo had been dealt with there in a year. Tho figures for the last completed year show that tho shipping at Auckland consists to a very large extent of small coastal boats, that traffic accounting for 613 ships of a tonnage of 56,074. Wellington’s coastal traffic figures show 194 boats, with a tonnage of 91,696. In regard to oversea steamers, Auckland’s total was 6079 slips, tonnage 1,802.308. For Wellington tho totals were 2837 ships, tonnage 2,707,993. The tonnage for January last totalled 180,376 in Auckland and 243,694 in Wellington.
