mr. McKenzie at kelburn. , Councillor McKenzie, a candidate for the Mayoralty, addressed a fairly well attended meeting at the Presbyterian Hall. Kelburn. Mr. H. H. Thompson presiding. Mr. McKJtmzie explained his reasons for standing, and stated that he was the son of one of the first colonists to make his home on this side of Wellington Harbour. He had carried on the good work of his father, and now came before the electors for further honour. The chief points of his address was the explanation. of the new tram, routes into this district, and tin? audience took a keen interest in the plan produced. Hp also explained his ideas re the formation of baths on tfie western side of Karori Road, and claimed that these together with tennis courts and bowling lawns could bo formed without additional cost to tho ratepayer from the spoil of the proposed Northland tunnel. (Applause.) Mr. McKenzie also outlined the council’s proposal for a new road to Kelburn, which met with solid approval. MR. MEADOWCROFT’S CANDIDATURE.

Mr. F.’Meadowcroft, who is offering himself as a candidate for municipal honours at the coinin'- election, though he has not yet served on the City Council, has a record for useful public service. For eight vars he has been president of the, Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty _ to Animals, and has been a strong advocate of the society’s nolie.y of inculcating the minds of the young solicitude and love lor our dumb friends. As a successful business man. Mr. Meadowcroft has been of value to a number. of commercial and local bodies with which he has been connected. He is y«cepresident of the Association of British Manufacturers, a member of the Rotarv Club, of the Chamber of Commerce, and of the Committee of the Licensing Bench nt tho last election of which he was returned at tho top of the poll. T n the nast- also, as president of tho Kelburn Ratepayers’ Association, he was actively connected with the movement for the improvement of the facilities and tlij> general, ndvanbement of that suburb. It is cnly natural that with tht splendid example of the garden of Bournvillo before him he should be a strong supporter of the Town Planning Association, of whk-n he is vicepresident Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1867, Mr. Meadowcroft wont to Australia as a boy., joining the firm of Cadbury Bros, in 1885. He came to New Zealand as manager in 1890. Tho big Bouinville noopl? were then a family concern, and the business was carried on as such until about two years ago, when a New Zealand company was formed. Mr. Meadowcroft then became managing director of tho firm; a fitting consummation to his thirty-two years of service. In passing it may bo mentioned that Mr. Meadowcroft is a keen bowlpr. He is a member of the Dominion Bowling Council, and president of the Wellington Bowling Centre. The latter position he has held no less than three times. For a number of rears he was president of tho Kelburn Bowling Club.
