The “Daily Express’s” Dublin correspondent. says: “Ireland was never more hopeful than now. The Government forces are obtaining a stronger grip on the country, and crime and lawlessness are being suppressed relentlessly. The most significant indication of the country’s new condition is tho fact that President Cosgrave has spent the last two days at the races, accompanied by the GovernorGeneral. Such a. dangerous proceeding would not have been thought of a few weeks ago.”—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

THE SHOOTING OF LIAM LYNCH

DEATH-KNELL OF THE REBELLION

London, April 10. Whenth'o Free State troops swooped down towards tlie farmhouse where the Republican meeting was being held the rebels fled before the troops arrived. Liam Lynch and a few followers quickly organised an ambush in order to cover the retreat of d© Valera and tho other leaders.

After frantic firing. Lynch’s party dashed from cover, firing as thev wont. It was -in the course of this running light across the fields that Lynch was badly wounded in the stomach a.nd captured. The arrest of do Valera is' only a matter of tinm. He is hemmed in on all sides.

It is generally believed in Dublin that to-day’s events mark the deathknell of the rebellion. De Valera, in a letter captured by the Free State, says: “No matter what the consequents, tlio truce offer must be rejected. It would simply amount to letting the Free State function. If we are ever driven to that stage, it would bo best simply to quit.”—Aus.-N.Z-Cable Assn.
