NEW TRACKS IN WILLIS STREET

Willis Street east, between Harbour Street and Mercer Street, was closed for traffic yesterday, in order that the track-laying gang (under Mr. J. Hogan) could get to work on the overdue work of relaying the tracks along that busy thoroughfare. Some parts of the Millis Street tracks are sprung, as well as well worn, so that when cars travel along them in wet weather, the water underneath is squirted up under pressure. Not only are new tracks to be laid, but now that the widening has been completed the lines are to be centred on a concrete bitumen foundation. The work will occupy about six weeks.
