OAMARU ELECTION
ISSUE OF THE WRIT The vacancy in the Oamaru electorate was gazetted on April 3. The writ for tho by-election cannot be issued until the expiration of ten days after tho publication of tho notice in tho Gazette. Once the writ is issued, it is returnable within 28. days, and the returning officer is required to give twelve clear days’ notice of tlhe date of the election. What the date of the election will be is not yet ascertainable, but it is clear that; tho writ cannot issue before April 14. Tho same returning officer as conducted the Oamaru election in December will be employed for the by-elec-tion. He will be assisted by an expert in electoral matters. Mr. J. Hay, who ass : sted the returning officer nt the recent by-election in Tauranga. There was a heavy poll in tho Oamaru electorate last December. The number of those entitled to vote, including those who voted bv declaration, was 8842. and the total number of votes recorded was 8184.
