EINSTEIN THEORY

IS CORRECTNESS PROVED? 1 ECLIPSE OBSERVATIONS AT WALLAL BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. —Copyright. (Rec. April 6, 10 p.m.) Ottawa, April 6. A telegram from Toronto states that Dr. G. A. Chant, professor of astronomy at the University of Toronto, has announced tliat observations of the solar eclipse by Toronto scientists at Wallal, tend to show the correctness of the Einstein theory. Dr. Chant said that Einstein predicted that if his theory were correct, stars when photographed with the sun apparently in their midst would show displacement outward from the sun, as compared wtih the positions of the same stars when the sun was absent from their portion of the heavens. Afore than thirty stars were recognised on photographic plates, but only twenty-three were submitted to measurement, and eight of these were rejected later. The difficulty of measuring with certainty the position of somewhat indefinite images of faint stars made it impossible to obtain perfectly conclusive evidence of the law of variation of the displacement of stars relative to their distance from the sun, but the fact that there is displacement is quite certain, and its amount appears approximately that prodicterl by Einstein’s theory.—Aus.-N.Z.
