SUNDAY SCHOOL WORK

TEACHERS’ CONFERENCE AT MASTERTON. The conference of Sunday school teachers, under the auspices of the Youth Committee of the Presbyterian Church and the Wellington Sunday School Union, was held at Masterton during Easter. Between 60 and /0 visiting teachers and a like number of local representatives were present. Tlie conference opened on Thursday evening. A resolution was passed recommending teachers to give their support to the teaching of temperance to young people. . . On Good Friday evening a civic reception was given the delegates by the Mayor of Masterton, Mr. 0. N. U. Pragnell. Ths chair was takenby Dlr. James McGregor, who recently retired after fifty years’ service as superintendent of Knox, Church Sunday School. In a .stirring address ' the chairman eulogised the value of Sunday schools to the community. The Rev. G. T. Brown, of Palmorston North, delivered a thoughtful ad-, dress on “Worship and Reverence in School.” He said that reverence, was essential to true worship. Aids to reverence were short prayers in simple language) which touched . th© child s personal experience, bright singing with occasional explanation of the meaning conveyed in the hymns; and attention and directness during the exercises. Careful preparation and orderly procedure were necessary. He added: “Do not be afraid of ceremony in the conduct of the school, for children are born cercmonialists. ’ During the Saturday session a resolution was passed urging an amendment of the law relating. to Sunday trading. On Easter Sunday conference services were held in the various churches. The conference closed on Monday.
