RECENT CASES DECIDED SUMMARY OF THE AWARDS The following awards have been made by the Court of Arbitration: COOKS AND-STEWARDS. Wages per month: —Chief steward, chief cooks, cook-stewards, £l5 3s. 4d; cook-steward without assistant, £1 Bs. 4d.; chief cooks and chief stewards, where 20 or more passengers aro carried, £1 extra monthly; assistant cooks or stewards, under 17 years, £ll 3s. 4d.; cadet cooks or Stewards, £7 14s. 4d.: under 19 years, £9 4s. 4d.; under 21 years, £lO 4s. 4d.; stewardesses, £8 3s. 4d»; overEime, 2s. per hour; cadets, Is. ,6d. Hours of Work. —At. sea: ID_ P er day, to be worked within 15 hours from the individual time of commencement. In port: stewards, 8 hours (if required), between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.; cooks, 10 hours (if required) between 6 a.m. -nd 6 p.m.cook stewards, 10 hours, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays and Holidays.—When a vessel leaves any of the main ports on any Sunday or holiday, each worker shall be paid an extra day’s sea-pay. Workers employed on an excursion on Sunday or a holiday shall be paid Is. 3d. per hour with a minimum of ss. Holidays spent at sea shall be compensated for by a day off within a montlt. Half-a-day off shall be granted per week, or half-a-day’s sea pay. Fourteen days’ holiday annually shall be granted to all workers on full pay after twelve months’ service. Shore Pay. —Men employed when off a ship’s articles aro to be paid as follows:—Cadets, Is. per hour, overtime, Is. 6d.; assistant cooks or stewards, Is. 9d., and 2s. 7-Jd.; others, 2s. and 2s. IOJd.

Judge’s Note.—“ The Court, has not departed materially , from the provisions of the expired award. The principal matters in dispute were i* respect of wages and hours. These have been settled on the lines of other rpcent awards. We agre‘e with Mr. Justice Higgins that the nature and conditions of the employment ot stewards render comparisons with other workers inapplicable. In an interpretation asked for by Elie union, the Court held that “full pay” indicated that the money wages were to be paid without deduction. “Average weekly earnings” included board and lodging, but “full pay” had a narrower meaning; MASTERS AND OFFICERS. Pay.—Steamers, 101 to 600 gross tons: Masters, £34 3s. 4d.; chief offiUers, £25 3s. 4d.; seqouidi lofficeu’s. £2l 3s. 4d. 601 to 1000 tons: Masters, £36 3s. 4d.; chief officers, £26 3s. 4d.; second officers, £22 3s. 4d. Steamers under 101 tons, and steamers over 1001 tons, rates, to be fixed by agreement, but not less than the above rates. Overtime, 3s. per hour. Extra day’s pay for excursions on Sundays or holidays. Hours.—Ten per day where two mates are employed, or 60 per week whore there is only one. Victualling.—With 'accommodation Masters, Ils. per day,, or 635. per week; other officers, 10s. per day, or G3s. per week. Accommodation only, 4s. per day; victualling only 7s. 6d. day. Holidays.—After 12 months’ service, 21 days annually, to masters and 14 days to officers, without accommodation allowance. Masters to be paid wages for waiting time after holiday, and officers to be paid waiting time after ten days. Four hours weekly to be given, or monetary compensation allowed. Judge’s Note.—“ The Court has settled the clauses in dispute cm the linos of other recent awards

Overtime.—Time and a half to midnijjhy, jand (double time thereafter, except night workers. Call-backs on public holidays when cancelled, two hours overtime to be paid. Double time to be paid to men whose sixdays’ duty is on week days for Sundays, but to others, time and a half. Double time on Good Friday, Anzac Day, and Christmas Day. Workers on duty on holidays shall be allowed an annual holiday of fifteen consecutive days on fnll pay; other employees, seven days. Promotions. —To be made from employees in the service, seniority, capability, suitability, and record to be taken into consideration. Disputes.—A-Stipendiary Magistrate or Conciliation Commissioner shall decide all disputes. Judge’s Note.—“ The only matters referred to the Court for settlement were wages, the exemption of certain unions from the operation of,the preference clause, and the term of the award. Beyond providing that a conductor shall reach his maximum rate in his second year, instead of the third year as formerly, wo have not altered the existing rates of pay. . . . We take no responsibility for the preference clause, which was agreed upon by both parties, and is inserted _ at their request.” The clause excepting unions has been left as in the former agreement, as. with the exception of the Metal Workers’ Assistants’ Union, members of those unions are outside tho scope of the award. WELLINGTON AND DISTRICT SADDLERS. Wages.—Journeymen and journeywomen on heavier machines, than Al. 2s. Id. per hour; apprentices, after Serving five years, £3 ss. per week for six montrs, and £3 15s. for subsequent six months; female 'Stitchers and machinists, first year 15s. per week, second £l, third £1 55., fourth £1 10s.. fifth £1 17s. 6d.thereafter, Overtime. —Time and a half for first three hours and double time thereafter. Time lost through a worker’s

default to be made up before overtime is paid. , . , , -, Hours.—4B weekly, subject to Factories Act. Saturdays till noon in Wellington, Petone, and Lower Hutt. In other parts of the district till noon on Saturdays, or any day tno haltholiday is observed. Proportion.— Saddlery, one apprentice and one female stitcher to every three or fraction of three journeymen; in harness and collarmakinc blanches, one apprentice to one journeyman; machine branch, one apprentice three or fraction of three journey men; bridle cutting, one apprentice and two female stitchers to one jour"/judge’s Note.—" The Court is responsible for clauses dealing with unnroveKS, female work in bagmaking, overtime, and proportion of apprentices. The remaining bonuses are incorporated in the flat rate of wages. It was not thought advisable to incorporate the Auckland bagmaking clause Without hearing evidence. It is open to the parties to agree on a fresh aennition of work.”
