NEW TENNIS AREAS

TWELVE ACRES ACQUIRED A COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME A big scheme for tho provision of a large number of tennis courts at Miramar, where games may be played throughout the year, was submitted to the City Council last night. The Reserves Committee recommended tlhat the whole area available at Miramar, approximately twelve acres, be granted tho Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, for the purpose of forming tennis courts for the city. During the discussion that followed, it was pointed out that portion of the area, comprising two acres, recently acquired by the council, was concerned in the request of the Miramar deputation. It was moved that the report be referred back to the committee for further consideration. Councillor Duckie pointed out that 'the present was the. most comprehennivo scheme of its kind yet conceived in New Zealand. It was proposed that up to £12,000 be expended ultimately by the tennis authorities, ana that the schools, provincial and Dominion championships he contested at Miramar.

Councillor McKenzie thought the action of the Tennis Association was generous and public-spirited. Tlw council decided tq refer the report to the committee for further consideration, and for consultation with the tennis authorities.

Tennis courts and a children’s playground are to be erected at a halfacre block belonging to th© City Council at Vogeltown (corner of Khrull and Hoggard Streets. An additional area of 5.2 perches has been granted the Salamanca Tennis Club, for tho purpose of erecting a pavilion on their ground. NEW ZEALANDERS’ WINS AT BATHURST. (Rec. Arrangements are well in hand for Wanganui Easter tournament, which promises to be successful. A largo numtier of entries have been re-ceived-from Wellington, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Hawera, Kaponga, Stratford, etc., besides the local- clubs. The events comprise ladies’ and men’s singles and doubles (handicap and championship), also mixed doubles (handicap and championship). There will be two grades in tho men’s handicap singles, A and B. Tho tourney will be held on the St. John’s courts, of which there are seven, and if the entries are largb provision will be made for playing some of the preliminary matches on other nearby courts.
