TECHNICAL COLLEGE
SHORTAGE OF'ACCOMMODATION GRANT OF £21,580 SOUGHT Th© shortage of accommodation at tho Technical College was alluded to on Monday by tho chairman, Mr. W. H. Bennett.
Th© director’s report stated: “The numbers in the Technical High School and in the evening school are as follow : —ln the Technical High School on March 13, the number of pupils in actual attendance was 586, as compafed • with 453 for 1922. Tn the evening school the number of students in attendance was 873, as compared with 775 for 1922. Tfie totai increase in the number of students to date is therefore 231. Owing to the growth of tho evening school it has been necessary to start extra classes in the following:—English and arithmetic, shorthand and typewriting, electricity and magnetism, while we have been obliged to decline further entries in elementary chemistry, millinery, dressmaking, aixJ ordinary cookery. It would be very desirable if another class in shorthand could bo formed, but we have no room available in th© old buildings and tho new buildings are not yet ready for us© by girl students in the evening. Last month I was able to report a large increase in the number of pupils attending the Technical High School for the building course; and 1 am glad to say that a similar increase has been shown in the evening school, where we have not less than 33 carpentry and joinery apprentices attending the . classes.” It was decided to send a deputation to tho Prime Minister, to ask for a grant of £21,580 to complote the northeast portion of the front of th© new college, and to’ provide two extra rooms for cookery and dressmaking.
