PRAYERS FOR RAIN
DROUGHT IN AUSTRALIA. STOCK AND CROPS SUFFER BADLY BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. —Copyright. (Rec. Afarch 20, 7.20 p.m.) Sydney, Afarch 20. Under a Government proclamation to-morrow will be observed as a day of humiliation and prayers for rain. With the exception of a few favoured districts, chiefly coastal, the whole country is suffering from a severe water shortage as the result of a protracted hot spell. In many places in inland districts even household water is being carted for miles. Steck and crops are suffering badly. Feed has dried up and the pastoral outlook is serious. Stock owners are pressing the Government to grant special railway concessions to enable them to remove' stock from droughtstricken areas to avert disaster. The prospects for the winter are gloomy unless rain arrives quickly. The weather if the past week has been remarkable. The sky has been ovreast, with frequent thunderstorms and every indication of rain, but it passes with an occasional drizzling sprinkle.—Press Assn.
