PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
THE POISONING OF PIGEONS. There was a good attendance of members of the committee at the fortnightly meeting of the "Wellington Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The meeting was held on Mondx/ last, and was presided over by tlie president, Mr. F. Meadowcroft. Since the previous meeting the inspector, besides having to investigate numerous cases of''alleged. cruelty in the city and suburbs, had travelled to Levin and Palmerston North. Members of the committee reported that complaints had been made to them about the poisoning of pigeons. The inspector (Captain Henry) explained that lie. could not take action, as his information was that no cruelty had been practised in destroying the birds, the poison used apparently acting almost instantaneously. Collections, it was reported, amounted to £2O 11s., including £3 3s. from the Wellington "Warehousemen’s Association, £1 Is. each from Mrs. C. JI. Seville. Shaw, Savill and Albion Shipping Co., F. Lamberg, Henry Berrv and Co., and £1 each from Mrs. T. M. Wilford and Messrs. Cook and Cook.
