TRENTHAM BAYONET TRAGEDY

VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH The inquest on J. S. Lean, who was ■tabbed with a bayonet at Trentham, was concluded by the Coroner (Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.) yesterday was giveni by Dr. de Castro that tho deceased had been admitted to the Wellington Hospital at 3.5 a.m. on Friday, suffering from collapse resulting flora haemorrhage. An operation was performed immediately, but the youth died, two hours later. The Coroner found that the deceased died from syncope following haemorrhage caused by a bayonet wound accidentally inflicted in the abdomen, while deceased was engaged in a friendly scuffle with some companions at Trentham. “1 might state ” added His Worship, “that I have been assured by Colonel Burgess that in the future drastic steps will be taken, to prevent the recurrence of a similar happening. It is very sad both for the boy who lost his life, and the lad who inflicted the wound.” By Telegraph.—press Association. Dunedin, March 19. The funeral of J. S. Lean, who was accidentally bayoneted at Trentham, took place at Port Chalmers this afternoon. The gun carriage was a mass of wreaths. Major Lampen. O.C. tho Otago district, was present, and cadets and territorials participated. Tho Minister of Defence was also represented.
