EMPIRE ECONOMIC CONFERENCE

UNAVOIDABLE POST PONEMENT

Several factors have intervened which apparently frustrate the original plan to hold an Imperial Economic Conference in April or May of the present year. The purpose of this conference is to consider plans for the development of tiro resources of tho Dominions, and of the trade between the Dominions themselves and between rhe Dominions and Great Britain. This means, of course, the study of the economic possibilities of the Empire, of the best methods for furthering inter-action among the Dominions and between the Dominions and the Home Country whether by imposing preferential tariffs by improving communications, etc., or finally by the investigation and drawing up of plans for the removal of obstacles in the way of the full develop mont of these possibilities. The conference is thus to be eminently practical, and not merely aca domic, and it it most unfortunate that unforeseen circumstances compel its postponement. “The Australian Commonwealth and New Zealand have both recently had a general election, and in both cases.” savs tho “Morning - Post” (London), “tho political situation is not sufficiently clear to permit of a suitable delegate with full powers, being in England bv April next, while just at that time tho Canadian Parliament will be in session, and tho Canadian Government will not be able to send over -the men bv whom it would wish to be represented. The idea that the conference shall be held has been generally approved by the Governments concerned. though. South Africa has not yet given a definite reply. If it is to be hold in tho near future, however, it must either be in the oarlv summer or simultaneously with the Conference of Premiers of the Empire, which ’s due to meet this year. These two possibilities arc being considered by the House and Dominion Governments.” The Primo Minister (Air. Massey) announced during the week that ho was unnh'o to accept the invitation of the British Government to attend the Econoipic Conference.
