MAYORAL ELECTION
EFFORTS TO ARRANGE A STRAIGHT-OUT FIGHT Further efforts made by a committee of Wellington citizens, not connected with any organised body, to bring about a reduction in the number of candidates for the Alcyoral office, have not been attended with any degree of success. After the. first meeting of tho candidates with this committee one of the candidates,. Air. G. Mitchell, offered to submit his name with the others to any independent tribunal, but Messrs. R. A. Wright and L. AlcKenzie preferred to consult their respective committees. A second meeting was held this week, when it was intimated that Mr. Wright’s committee had decided that he sihou’d go on with the contest. Mr. L. AlcKenzie attended the meeting, and stated that his committee did not see why he should stand, down or submit his name to a selection, as he had stood down twice previously, and had served tho city as a councillor for twelve years.
