A STOP-OUT CLUB
BOYS OF LARRIKIN TYPE FALSE FIRE ALARMS GIVEN Eight boys who had been remanded in order that inquiries concerning them might bo made from the probation officers, were again before the Magistrate’s Court" yesterday, charged with giving a series of false lire alarms. All were m tho neighbourhood of 17 years of age. Their names were:—Thomas James Cannon, Frederick William Bennett, Daniel Patrick O’Connor, Thomas "William Cameron, John Osborne, Herbert Porter, Gordon Campbell, and William Stevenson.
The reports of the probation officers were far from satisfactory. Mr. T. P. Mills said that the boys were of larrikin type, and it would be a good tiling if the gang were broken up. They needed a rap over tho knuckles. Two of the boys, said Mr, Shell, were already on probation. The Rev. T. F. Taylor spoko on behalf of some of tho boys. Sub-Inspector Cummings: Most of the boys belong to the ‘'Stop Out Club.” I don’t know tho meaning or origin of that, but I suppose it means they stay out lato at night. The Magistrate, Mr. E. Page, commented on tho systematic nature of the offences, and the expense to which they put the public. There was also tlio question of tho danger caused by the brigade turning out in a hurry. The boys were each fined £5 on one charge, and ordered to come up for sentence when called on within twelve months in regard to the others, with restrictions on their conduct. The amounts will bo paid in ss. instalments and will go to the local body concerned.
