Nelson is to celebrate the 81st. birthday of the province, wlrch falls on February 1 next.' with a week of gay carnival' The Citv of Nelson is one of those places generously endowed by nature with a prolific supply of beauty spots and scenic resorts. It has an equable climate, while its sunshine record is well known. Carnival week, which commences on Alonday, January 29. wRI also bo known as “Back to Nelson” week, a special appeal being made to ex-Nelsonians to return and participate in the week’s festivities. A mammoth programme has boen arranged for the occasion and the “Afardi Gras” promises tn excel any similar event recorded in the Dominion. While manv popular carnival features aro included in the week s schedule, there are also several novelties, one of which is a race between the road rollers of the district. _ A great canoe regatta, and an imposing pageant, together wth lantern parades, and fireworks displavs, are other spectacular features. One of the most interestum- fixtures is tho motor-cycling tournament, when several of the Dominion’s speed kings will compete. This event will be followed in the evening by a boxing tournament, for which excellent bouts are promised. It is announced that excursion fares have K'ftn arranged and reduced prices bv the Anchor line of steamers will prevail from January 25 to February 1, and will bo available for return until February 17. Intending visitors mav secure accommodation by writing the carnival socretnrv. Nelson is an ideal spot for a holidnv, .and those in the Nortn Island who have not yet experience;! the beauties of that city should avail themselves of the opportunity to see it during carnival wook, when special facilities for seeing the fair city will exist.
