ROWING

OPENING OF THE SEASON. Aquatic sports will" be given a start this afternoon, with the opening or thf season of the local rowing clubs and the Wellington Navals Boating Society. For the first time for years the two openings will bo more or less combined, as the Boating Society has arranged its programme so that its races will finish during the intervals between the association’s events. The association's opening will be performed by Mr. lan Duncan, and will be followed, by the inter-club races for the Redding Shield. Six races will be held—senior, maiden, and youths’

fours, senior and maiden double sculls and veterans’ fours —the first two of which, by duplication of crews from all clubs, will see six starters. After the Wellington Club’s somewhat easy win last year there is expected to be a very even contest for the trophy, judging by the standard shown at the end of last season. After the opening of the Navals’ season, three cutter races over a course of 1J miles will take place. The ■■ first of these (for the Mothes Cup) will he between the 15t'h (Wellington) and the 17th (Petone) Batteries of,tho N.Z.A , the second between Petone and Wellington exNavals, aud tho last a club race of the society’s members.
