EXPENSIVE BORROWING "There is at least one Shylock in Wellington who is lending money to very poor people on their furniture," said Mr. G. Mitchell (Wellington South) in the House yesterday. He quoted the case of a woman who, in September of Inst year, had borrowed d>2o on her furniture, and in October had secured another JEIO. She had repaid altogether .£2O ss. 6d.< and was now in debt to the amount of -£33 7s. Gd. This, said Mr. Mitchell, was not an isolated case, and these usurious practices should be stopped. He asked the Minister of Justice to see whether the lender in> question was acting within the law, and he suggested that if the transaction was within thv law, the Minister should take steps to have the law amended. A member: Is this a gentleman with a foreign name? Mr. Mitchell: Yes. a foreign name. The Minister promised on being supplied with names and particulars to have the case thoroughly investigated.
