WAR RELIEF

WHAT IS BEING DONE IN WELLINGTON. Messrs. L. 0. H. Tripp W. Ferguson, 0. M. Luke, Colonel Pow, John Hutcheson, and O. Watson were present at the meeting of the executive committee of the Wellington! War Relief Association yesterday afternoon. The Applications Committee reported that it had met on four occasions since the last meeting of the executive committee, and had dealt with 276 cases. Of these 61 were new applications, inclusive of two claims referred by it to the Finance Committee. The total number of applications received was 317, and there were 141 cases still under action. During the period July 28, 1922, to August 24, 1922, inclusive, the number of persons who called at the office was 313. Of these, 183 applied for direct and 130 for indirect assistance, and upon subjects too diverse in nature to enumerate. Iho Emergency Committee had met on 17 occasions during the period, and had dealt with 74 cases, thus enabling a decision to bo given to the major portion of those applicants, who are the responsibility of the association within 24 hours of the time their claims were received. The Finance Committee met on two occasions—one ordinary and one special —since the executive last met; and in addition to its control ■of financial operations, had dealt with eleven cases, each involving a sum exceeding, £5O. Nine of the cases required revision respecting the unpaid balance of Joans previously awarded by the committee. Of the two new applications, one was for assistance to acquire residential property (£250), and che other for help to enter the fishing' industry (£6O). Both these claims having been presented by disabled soldiers, were, after careful inquiry and consideration, favourably considered by the committee. Apart from these cases, two others, in which there existed no war disabiliity, were declined by the Applications Committee without reference to the Finance Committee. They. amounted to £5OO (residents! property). The grand total involved was £2060 7s. 9d. The total considered bv the Finance Committee only was £1560 7s. 9d., comprised by (farms) old loans £5OO, unpaid balance £5OO (houses), old loans £6lO 7s. 9d., unpaid balance £542 7s. 9d., new loan approved £250 (commercial), old loans £lOO, unpaid balance £37 9s. 6d., new loan approved £lOO. The unpaid balances on all old loans amo.unted ! to £1429 17s. 3d. The total available funds as at July 31 last were: —Investments, £41,500; current balances, £2999 14s. 3d.: petty cash, £3O; total. £43,829 14s. 3d.
