FEDERAL POLITICS

♦ OPENING OF PARLIAMENT LEGISLATION PROPOSED BY TKLBGRAPH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT. (Rec. June 28, 9.35 p.m.) ' Melbourne, Juno 23. The Federal Parliament opened today with all the pre-war ceremonial. The Governor-General’s speech foreshadowed rigid economy in the Public Service and administration generally, an extension of commercial aviation services, and amendments to the Constitution to extend Federal power®. Although the revenue for the year will exceed the estimates, no relief of taxation was indicated. Other legislation proposed includes the granting of representation in Parliament to the Northern Territory, and amendment of the Arbitration Act.

At a meeting of the Federal Cabinet, the Prime Minister (Mr. W. M. Hughes) hinted that a reduction in taxation was likely', and that a board of directors to manage the Commonwealth Line of shipping would be appointed. He also suggested proposals for a constitutional referendum to be held at the same time as the next elections.—Press Assn.
