WOMEN AT RACE MEETINGS
SHOULD THEY BE SERVED WITH LIQUOR? During the hearing, of an application by the licensee of the Taita Hotel for'permission to run the booth at the AVellington races, made to the Hutt Licensing Committee (yesterday, Senior-Sergeant Bird drew attention to the fact that in the past, especially at the last two race meetings, there had been far too, many women found drunk on tho course. There was a room used as a storeroom at the side of the booth, and women had congregated there. He recommended that the room be closed during the hours that the bar was open, and he also asked the Bench to consider the advisability of supplying women with liquor. ' Mr. Riddell: The committee cannot restrict tho licensee regarding supplying women, but if closing the room will make conditions better, the room must be kept closed. Mr. AVillis (for the applicant): The licensee is willing to take every precaution to keep the room locked. Air. O’Leary, who appeared on behalf of the AVellington Racing Club, then stated that the officials of ths club would, do their host to see that the drinking by women was minimised. A racecourse license was granted the applicant, on the condition that the room mentioned be closed and kept closed during the time that the license is available, that is, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
