LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on ‘Monday, the Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand) presiding. Also present were Councillors J. Brasall, A. Macaskill, W. Meldrum, J. Mitchell, W. N. Dempsey, A. J. Hobbs, A. J. West, A. Mcßain. Tho Department of Agriculture wrote suggesting that/the council appoint its own noxious, weed inspector. On the motion of Councillor Hobbs, it was decided to give effect to the suggesA recommendation was received from tho Department of Health, regarding the appointment of a sanitary inspector who has passed the Sanitary Institute examination. It was decided that applications bo called immediate#/ for tne position. . Permission was granted the Society for the Protection of Women and Children to use .the council room for meetings of that society on tho first Tuesday in each mouth. A letter from the town clerk, Wellington, calling a meeting of the Hutt Road Maintenance Board, and stating that the estimated expenditure for tho current year was £4OOO, was received. The Mayor was instructed to attend the meeting. 1 . . A cheque for £l7 10s. 4d., being tho cost of additions made to the Honours Board, wks received from Mr. H. Baldwin. The council decided, on the Mayor’s motion, that Mr. Baldwin be replied to, and lie thanked for his generosity and public spirit. . The Lower Hutt Brass Band wrote agieeing to the council’s offer for £2o for five concerts. ' On behalf of Messrs. A. Boyle, G. Laing-Mason,, and Pyne’s Trustees, Mt. Walcot J. Wood wrote asking that Wilford Street be properly formed, as at present it is practically impassable. It was-decided to reply, advising that it was impossible to undertake the woik at present. Permission to use the room known as the gymnasium, as a room, was granted Mr. A. S. Hciidor°The condition of the roads in the vicinity of Gracefield was the subject of a deputation headed by Mr. James Scotson. Tho condition of the roads was described as “absolutely disgraceful ” Residents in the vicinity were under a great handicap, and it was impossible for two vehicles to passi on the roads, Metal was badly needed, and altogether, the roads were in great •'need of attention. The Mayor expressed sympathy with the dcpl xl a ' ■ tion. but as far as he could see the road could not be widened for some time. However, ho would see what could be done in the way of metalling.
