POLICE PROSECUTIONS Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.AL, heard the police cases in the Alagistrato’s Court yesterday. Evelyn Yarker, who was charged with having attempted to commit suicide by taking poison, was remanded for seven days. “You had better take a pull or you’ll be sent away,” the Magistrate warned Donald Matheson, who for the fourth time within six months had been guilty of drunkenness. Matheson was fined £l, and given the alternative of spending three days in gaol. Archibald John Kirk, for drunkenness and tho third breach of a prohibition order, was fined sums of 10s. and £1 respectively. “This is the man who was going round tho wharf some time ago cadging meals,” said Sub-Inspector AlcNatnara, by way of introducing John Dolan, who while in hospital had stolen £1 from a fellow-patient and come to town to spend it. Three months’ imprisonment was the penalty, awarded. Tlie Salvation Army having undertaken to look after Daniel Keane, who was charged with being' idle and disorderly, the Bench convicted him and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. Willie Wilson was alleged by the police to nave obtained 3s. 6d. from James Staples by falsely protending that he was a plumber in business at Upper Hutt, and had lost his train ticket and wallet. He was remanded till Friday on thp application of Chief Detective Kemp, who said that there were other similar charges to be brought against him. Charles Chenery was remanded to appear at Christchurch on a charge-of having failed to comply with a maintenance order, and fallen into arrears to the extent, of £143. CIVIL BUSINESS A TENEMENT CASE. ' In the Civil Court, before Air. Hunt, Mrs. A. Al. Hickey, purchaser of a four-roomed house occupied by William Needham, sought to obtain possession of tho dwelling on the ground that she required it for herself and tier family/ Tho defendant told the Court that he was a married man with five children, the eldest of whom was 17. He had been in the house six years, paying a rent of 14s. a week. Though he had made the greatest efforts he had been unable to find any other place where Ire and his wife and children could go to live. llio plaintiff and her husband, according to tho evidence of the latter, had been living in one room and paying 325. 6d. a week for it. Plaintiff had had a child within tho last few days. The Alagistrate explained to tho defendant that if tho plaintiff reasonably required the house for her own occupation, an order would ha Vo to be made. Archibald Lawrie, jun., denied that he had driven a car in a dangerous manner, but admitted that ho had driven without lights. The evidence for the prosecution was that he had collided with the side step of a motorcar in the dark. On the first charge defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs; on the second, he was lined £1 and costs. FAILING TO ATTEND DRILL. The Defence Department prosecuted R. Gilpin for failing to attend drill. He was convicted and fined 40s. and costs.

GOOD DEMAND FOR FEMALES. FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT. Palmerston North, June 24. There was a very large attendance at Mr. S. R. Lancaster’s annual sale of stud. Jerseys, held at his farm, Te Maiti, yesterday. Breeders were present from most of the provinces, and the stock sold went to all parts of the Dominion. The sale was conducted’ by Messrs. Dalgety and Co., in conjunction with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Messrs. R. C. Wallace and W. Stack acting as auctioneers. The younger stock were all by imported bulls, and were in excellent condition. There was not much demand for bulls. The cows sold particularly well, one by Don Miguel'out of Miss Neathead reaching 166gns., extra well bred selling at from 60gns. to 80gns., and others from 30gns. to 55gns. Heifers met very keen competition and all were sold, extra well bred at from lOOgns. to 142gns., really good sorts at from 70gns. to 95gns., and others from.4ogns. to 85izns. The only sales made for bulls were: Success of Bulls. 3 months old, at lOOgns., to Mr. D. Griffiths, New Plymouth ; Maiden’s Young Lad, at 95gns. to Mr. L. B. Sutton, Nelson, and Wotton Red Berry, at 50gns., to Mr. J. Street, Taumarunui. The highest price for a matron was 166gns., paid for Lynford Blossom by Mr. J. H. Street, of Taranaki, Other cows which brought over 50gns. were Fox’s Trod a. 80frns.; March Queen, 71gns.; To Wi Pearl, 67gns.: Mermaid’s Glory, 67gns.; and Nobilitv, 67gns., all purchased by Mr. D.
