TRADE WITH GERMANY
ADVANTAGES OF RESUMPTION - CRITICISM ANSWERED Sydney, June 27. The “Herald,” in a leader on the question of resuming trade with Germany, says that if the resumption were to result wholly to the advantage of Germany, there would be a more solid basis for much of the criticism levelled against it. Tho paper points out that Germany needs some or Australia’s- leading products, and that Australia must look to her to buy no inconsiderable portion of the surplus ofsuch products. The article continues: “Should Australia refuse to take German goods in exchange, how will the Germans payP, They cannot pay in money, or only in paper money, which Australia does not want Therefore, if she refuses to take goods In exchange for raw material, the upshot will be that Germany will speedily have to look elsewhere for her supplies. Manifestly, also, if Germany Is to pay her reparation debts, in which the Commonwealth is ihterested, she must again build up her foreign trade. Tho Entente Alliance cannot have it both ways, any more than can. Germany. They cannot thrust their old enemy out of participation in the trade of the groat markets of tho world, and at the same time expect to receive payments which can come only from such participation.”—Press Assn. (Reo. June 27, 8.55 p.m. ) London, June 26. The Pakeha, the first British ship to seek direct loading at Hamburg for Australia, only lifted forty tons. The nature of the cargo is unknown. —Aus.N.Z.
