FINED FOR KILLING PIGEON
“NOTHING LESS THAN £5 IN THE-FUTURE” Three youths, Drummond Hunt, Selwyn Hadfield, and Harold Thornton, who had been camping at Orongorongo, were charged at the Magistrate’s Court jesterday with having in their possession an absolutely protected animal, to wit, a pigeon. Mr. G. G. Watson, who appeared for the Acclimatisation Society, stated that the accused had been quite open ( in the matter. The inspector had dropped down upon the lads in camp, and f° un “ them in possession of a pigeon, £hese birds were fast disappearing in the Dominion, and had to be protected. It was no sport to shoot them, as they were so tame one could knock them off a branch with a stick. Iu was not suggested that the accused bad been slaughtering pigeons. , Mr. Hadfield, who represented the accused, pleaded for leniency, as the law regarding the liability of anyone having a pigeon in his possession was nC, nie presiding Magistrate, Ali-.Js*. 5 *.
