OVERDUE RATES
LARGE AMOUNT OUTSTANDING. At Thursday’s meeting of the City Council Councillor S. H. Underwood asked the Mayor (who had just been deprecating the manner in which the council had “outrun the constable ) how much money was outstanding in rates for the past year—the year ended March 31—and whether there were anv owing over £lOO. . The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) said that he had not looked into the fienrpq latelv. but at the tne year there had been over £2O 000 outstanding. He had spoken to the rate collector about these outstanding rates and understood that some had paid in> in the meantime. On the other hand, there were some who had asked for time, owing to the money, stringency that existed. ■ .
