TRAMWAYS HOLD-UP

BREAKDOWN AT POWER HOUSE

The tramway service had to be curtailed yesterday afternoon, owing to a breakdown in one of the big generating sets at the tramways power-house in Jervois Quay. This necessitated a restricted ' service between 4.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.—the peak load period. Cars were dispatched at fairly regular intervals from Courtenay Place southwards and from Government Buildings northwards. The effect of the breakdown is that out of 4000 kilowatts only 2400 are available, and there is little prospect of any improvement until the middle of next week. In the meantime it will only be possible to run a restricted service, although every effort will bo made to remedy the defect as soon as possible.
