TAXATION COMMITTEE
The Prime Minister has informed Mr. E. .Newman, M-P., that arrangements fiave been made for three representatives of the Farmers’ Union to sit on' the Taxation Committee, which will be convened shortly. The representatives presumably will bw members of the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union. The Taxation Committee is an entirely informal body. It owes its existence to a promise ma<Je by the Primo Minister during the recent session of Parliament that representatives of the chambers of commerce would be given an opportunity to confer with the Commissioner of . Taxes a n d the official head of the Treasury regarding the incidence of taxation. Mr. Massey has stated that -the Government will place before Parliament proposals for the readjustment of taxation, and the commercial interests are anxious to present their side of the case. The farmers are directly interested as payers of both land tax’ and income tax. The conference probably ■ will take place some time next month. Its members will be able to make suggestions to the officers and to obtain information that may help them to understand the departmental point of view. The committee eventually may make some recommendations for the consideration. of the Government.
